SALT-SODA-SUBMERGED

A Group Show of Salt & Soda Fired Ceramics and the Submerged / Reclaimed Canvases of Henry Dean

The alliance of soda and salt-fired ceramics with the immersed canvases of Henry Dean creates a striking and fascinating coupling, offering a unique exploration of materiality and transformation. Each atmospheric presentation reflects an allure with natural elements and the vigorous physical and chemical processes shaping them.

The interaction of clay with soda and salt firing techniques results in unpredictable textures and colors, echoing the spontaneous beauty of nature. These ceramics, with their organic surfaces, mirror the ever-changing dynamics of fire and elemental forces.

Meanwhile, Dean’s canvases engage space as knowing, through intentional installation of mounted canvases in Nature, where they become membranes in unpredictable tidal settings. Action of water, air, Sun and earth are imprinted into compositions as marks and colors expressing fluidity, transience. Exposure-submerging processes and eventual reclamation, harvesting and finishing produce simulations of Nature/ Cosmos, conveying appearance-absence, movement absorbing time. Dean’s paintings step beyond referencing or describing landscape, creating metaphors that concern memory, anticipation, cycles of life—all recurring themes in his work.

This collection serves as a meditative exploration of change, resilience, and the interplay of all things. “Salt, Soda, Submerged” invites viewers to engage in a sensory experience, prompting reflection on the elegant chaos of the natural world.
